The New York-based talent Matthew Fisher (b. 1989, United States) imbues sculptural stone objects with an anthropological slant. As a trained classical dancer, he has channeled that profundity into a collection representing a new frontier in the convergence of artifact and functional design. Fisher pays it forward by expanding how we see and understand our innate fascination with stone.
Through the study of antiquities, Matthew found his voice in curvaceous bowls and vessels rife with nostalgia. Sophisticated details are often carved with exacting precision, classical references are distilled, and function is elevated from routine to ritual. Once arriving at form, he begins his slow, intuitive work of calling upon his network of quarries, miners, suppliers, and yards, searching for a material that will breathe life into form.
The process of a single work can take months. Matthew transforms the cold, inert material into a manifestation of divine force and a meditation on the passage of time. Honoring the material of the earth he works with, the stone is left unsealed in its natural state. Polishing to a matte sheen is done sparingly, enough to reveal the colored story of creation within the stone.
